Jury trials suspended in Maryland as COVID cases spike

Maryland’s Hicks rule, which requires that criminal trials in circuit court begin within 180 days of a defendant’s first appearance in court, will essentially be waived until trials are able to resume, according to Getty’s order. Thirty days will be added to the tally to allow courts time to conduct hearings and reschedule jury trials, the order stated. For criminal cases that are pending or initiated during the shutdown, the deadline for preliminary hearings to take place will be extended to Feb. 9.
