Squirreled away for 25 years, the original Maryland State House acorn returns to Annapolis

Randy Walker, left, and Larry Mackey, carpenters for Fiorini Bros., Inc., inspect the separation point at the base of the 200-year-old decorative apron that sits atop the dome of the Maryland State House in Annapolis Tuesday, August 20, 1996. The cypress acorn, sheathed in copper and plated with gold, is badly deteriorated from two centuries of water and wind. It will be removed from the dome of the state house using a helicopter. An acorn made of 31 circular sections of cypress will take its place. (AP Photo/John Mummert) (JOHN MUMMERT / Associated Press)
